iPod sales top 100m

The international spread of "poddism" passed a significant milestone with the sale of the hundred millionth iPod since Apple unleashed the little white music player on an unsuspecting world in November 2001.

Since its launch, the iPod has gained fans from Downing Street to Hollywood and has spawned an industry of more than 4,000 accessories - including a Louis Vuitton designer case. Despite a brief dip last year, sales have picked up. In the three months to December, Apple delivered 21m players - an increase of 50% on the previous year's run-up to Christmas.

Credit for the iPod lies partly in British hands - it was designed by Chingford-born Jonathan Ive, who is now Apple's head of industrial design.
