Create an online photo album

A popular option for putting your photos online is to create your own Web site and use it to display your photos. One drawback is that your visitors won’t be able to easily order prints of their favorite photos. But if that’s OK with you, there are lots of free and low-cost tools dedicated to creating Web pages of your photos.


They usually come with a variety of templates so you can choose the look of your album, or, if you know how to use HTML, you can customize it to your heart’s content. One of the better ones is the free JAlbum. It can be used “out of the box” with its built-in templates, or you can spend hours tweaking it just the way you want.


If you have your own site and are reasonably tech savvy (or know someone who is), you can install Web-based software on that site. The two most popular packages, both free, are Coppermine Photo Gallery and Gallery. Note: Both Coppermine Photo Gallery and Gallery need to be installed on your Web site’s server, and require configuring databases and other features—so be warned, they are not for the novice Web user.
